Apparently things are now all good (until they’re not again). One person I can guarantee isn’t holding things up on his end is the mighty Cappadonna a/k/a the Cab Driver. For no apparent reason other than he’s just nice like that, Cappa has been putting in work with a couple of scene-stealing cameos on recent projects. Now I should preface this: if you need a primer on Cappa’s style, just stop right here because you won’t get the rest of the post. Yes, it doesn’t always rhyme (like his entire verse from “Triumph”). Yes, he’s an unrepentant shit talker for a guy who was once a gypsy cab driver in Baltimore. But there’s an art to his darts. And he’s been twistin them shits from the heart recently.
Exhibit A: his verse on “Shoguns” from the CZARFACE album. This is a straight shit-talking, dick swinging hip hop verse, but Cappa being who he is, has to put his own curious spin on this simple task. Lines like “I fly cherry head n****s like 9-11,” “compared to me your just another retard” and the pause-worthy “If I don’t bust you, my mans gon touch you.”
Exhibit B: his guest spot on “Center of Attraction,” from Ghost’s superb new album with Adrian Younge Twelve Reasons to Die. The album follows a loose story about Tony Starks (Ghost) falling for some devious chick, which is detailed in this track. After Ghost is done his adoring dedication to his seemingly loyal lady, Cappa comes in to offer his rebuttal. I don’t even have to list the quotables here…he had me at “Don’t even fall for that caucasoid (?), she got the drink laced, trying to turn you to an android.”
Exhibit C: in between all these verses, he actually released a new solo album (!), this one called Eyrth, Wynd & Fyre (he doesn’t want to get sued, I suppose). I haven’t heard much from it, but I hope it’s as good as the aforementioned tracks.
And in another strange move, he just released this video…but it’s for a song from his previous album The Pilgrimage from 2011.
But hey, he can do what he wants. He’s Cappadonna.
